What to Wear for a Cool Weather Walk.
A cool morning and a sunny afternoon can feel like two different seasons this time of year. When you’re heading out for a walk, a few simple layers can help you stay comfortable as the temperature—and your activity level—changes.
Start with a moisture-wicking base layer against your skin. On mornings in the 30s or low 40s, add a warmer fleece. For a milder afternoon, a lightweight fleece may be enough. If mist, snow or wind is in the forecast, bring an outer shell to help keep the weather out.
At Adventure Outfitters, we often talk with people who are excited to get outside but are dressed more warmly than they’ll need once they start moving. Heavy coats and snow pants may feel cozy at first, but a brisk walk can have you warming up quickly.
The right amount of clothing depends on the conditions and your pace. Aim to feel a little cool at the start, rather than bundled up and toasty. As you walk, adjust or remove a layer before you become overly warm and sweaty. Keep that extra layer handy for a rest stop or a change in the weather.
Don’t forget the small things. A light hat and gloves can make a chilly start more comfortable, and sunglasses are useful on bright afternoons. Sun protection still belongs in your routine, too, even when the air feels cold.
Dressing for a cool-weather walk doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a good base layer, give yourself options and adjust as you go. If you need help choosing what to wear, our Adventure Outfitters team is happy to help.
